This fine old Lakes cottage probably started life in the 1600's as a farm and then was much enlarged around in the early 1700's and then again about 1830. There was one later addition of a small wing in the 1970's. It was a private house for some quite important local families then later Lakes Artist 'Crossland' who used the large lounge (now the guest lounge) in the early part of the last century as his studio for painting massive landscape pictures. The building was purchased by the YWCA just after the last war in about 1947 and changed into a hostel. It remained in the hands of the YWCA until 2002 when it became an independant hostel. Ok, so we have squeaky floors, prehistoric (but improved and pretty good) plumbing - its good to be patient when you invite hot water to appear at a sink, we have windows that rattle in a gale, steps and stairs everywhere and we are not over endowed in the toilets department. But you also normally get free wifi morning and evening, a fantastic location, a building with more charecter and style than most and a cranky but helpful team to try to help make your stay a good one.
